After Two Struggling Years, I’m Back at Chelsea Flower Show — and Back in My Garden

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m retired now. I used to work in a school office. These days I spend most of my time in the garden. It’s always been my thing really. I can sit with a cup of tea and just look out at it, that’s my peace.

What kind of problems were you having?

My knees, mainly. Stiffness first thing, and then again if I’d been on my feet for a while. It just made everything feel a bit harder than it should be.

How did that affect you day to day?

I started falling behind a bit. I’d look out at the garden and see jobs that needed doing, but I just wasn’t keeping up the way I used to. That bothered me more than anything. I’ve always taken pride in it.

Was there a moment it really hit you?

Yes. I go to the Chelsea Flower Show every year. Coming down from Harrogate, I usually book a hotel for a couple of nights so I can do it properly over two days.

In 2024 I did that, but I remember struggling. I was stopping more, avoiding steps, and in the end I didn’t see half of what I wanted. I came home thinking, that wasn’t how it used to be.

What changed after that?

Around that time, my sister had given me a tube of Advance7. I wasn’t expecting much, but I started using it regularly.

By 2025, I only went for one day, but I actually managed to see more in that one day than I had the year before. That was a turning point.

And how are things now?

This year, 2026, I’ve booked the hotel again for two nights. I’ve made a list of what I want to see, and I’m very confident that I’ll be able to get around properly this time and see as much as possible.

It’s a lovely feeling. I’m really looking forward to it.

Have you made any other changes?

Yes, I started taking the capsules in January, and I do feel they’ve made a difference. It’s not just my knees, I feel more comfortable in myself generally.

I think that’s partly because I’ve been able to move more, and without really trying, I’ve become a bit fitter. I do surprise myself sometimes, not just with how far I walk, but how quickly I seem to get along now.

I feel a bit more adventurous again. I’ll set off and think I’ll just go a little further, and before I know it I have.

As you get older, you can’t help but feel that things are gradually slowing down. This feels like it’s gone the other way a little, and that’s a very positive feeling.

And what about the foot cream?

I’ve recently tried the foot cream as well. My feet aren’t especially painful, but after a walk they can feel a little tired, and I’ve always had rather dry skin on my feet.

I use it in the evening, just before bed, and it’s become something I really enjoy. It has a fresh feel to it, and it’s a nice way to wind down at the end of the day.

It took a couple of weeks, perhaps three, but I started to notice my skin becoming much smoother. Now they look very good.

I’ve even found that where I’ve used a little on my hands, they’ve become noticeably softer as well.

What’s it like at home now?

Completely different. I look out at the garden now and feel quite proud of it again. It’s probably the best it’s been in a long time.

And more than anything, I feel like myself again.
